Waiting for Warmth

the water is running
as I stand before the mirror
waiting for it to warm
to wash, shave and comb my hair

waiting, too, for something else
the coldness in me to go
in the light of a love
that will not run out as I grow old

the winter stillness stirs
my eyes pool
clearing my way
with tears

without one
I am not
in

locked
out of my
own

told
to disappear
from the threshold

I am
am I not
gift

mystery
beyond
measure

of this
I cannot be
outside

but a lie
keeps whispering:
pay

to pass
